　章題の'argonauta'（タコブネ）は不思議な生き物である。母のタコブネは卵を産み付けた貝を抱えて海の表面に浮かび上がり、そこで卵を孵し、子どもを育てる。子どもたちが巣立つと、母のタコブネは貝を捨てて新しい生活を始める。

　以前に読んだとき、この章は何だかよくわからなかった。今回、どうやら意味は読み取ったが、やはりピンと来ない。身体を通っていく感じがしないのだ。

　もしかしたら、そう思うのは、今のわたしが貝殻にあれやこれや付けつつある牡蠣の段階だからなのかもしれない。

Second Adolescence

Parhaps, middle age is, or should be a period of shedding shells.

For is it not possible that middle age can be looked upon as a period of second flowering, second growth, even a kind of second adolescence?

　思春期と中年期ばかりで構成されている家族――嵐の中にいるようなものかもしれない。
